Can you IM other IM services when using google talk?

I have windows live messenger right now, but I have a lot of friends who have aim. I don't want to download aim because it messes with my computer. I only have one contact on windows messenger. If I downloaded the google talk, would I be able to talk to anyone, no matter what there service is?
